About the Culture Trail

In addition to the cultural monuments of the former synagogue and Jewish cemetery, Rexingen has other historic buildings and sites to offer its visitors.

Most Jewish families lived in the so-called “Unterdorf” (lower village) on Freudenstädter Straße, Bergstraße, Lichtenbergstraße, and Kirchstraße. In other words, close to the synagogue, the Catholic church, and the elementary school. This is also where the Jewish shops were located: grocery stores, kosher butchers, and restaurants. A walk through the village past the former synagogue up to the town hall, down Bergstraße back to the “center,” and then up into the deciduous forest to the Jewish cemetery provides a vivid impression of former village life with its Catholic-Jewish neighborhood at 16 selected stations. Numerous stumbling blocks along the way commemorate the period of exclusion, persecution, and extermination of the Jewish community.
